ಚೆನ್ನೈ: ‘ಸ್ಟೆರ್‌ಲೈಟ್’ ಕಂಪೆನಿಯ 2ನೇ ತಾಮ್ರ ಸಂಸ್ಕರಣ ಘಟಕದ ಕಾಮಗಾರಿ ಸ್ಥಗಿತಗೊಳಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮದ್ರಾಸ್‌ ಹೈಕೋರ್ಟ್‌ನ ಮಧುರೈ ಪೀಠ ಆದೇಶ ಹೊರಡಿಸಿದ್ದು, ಗೃಹ ಸಚಿವಾಲಯ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡು ಸರ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ವರದಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿದೆ.
ಘಟಕದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಆದೇಶ ಹೊರಡಿಸಿದ ಪೀಠವು ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ವಿಚಾರಣೆಗೆ ಅನುಮತಿ ನೀಡಿದೆ.
ತಾಮ್ರ ಸಂಸ್ಕರಣ ಘಟಕವನ್ನು ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಮುಚ್ಚುವಂತೆ ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ಹಿಂಸಾಚಾರಕ್ಕೆ ತಿರುಗಿ ಪೊಲೀಸರು ನಡೆಸಿದ ಗೋಲಿಬಾರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ 11 ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನಾಕಾರರು ಮೃತಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು.
ಘಟಕದಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರುವ ವಿಷಕಾರಿ ಅನಿಲವು ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಜನರ ಆರೋಗ್ಯದ ಮೇಲೆ ದುಷ್ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಬೀರುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಪರಿಸರಕ್ಕೂ ಹಾನಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಘಟಕವನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಬೇಕೆಂದು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರು ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ಕೈಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.
20 ಸಾವಿರಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನಾಕಾರರು ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ವಾಹನಗಳಿಗೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಹಚ್ಚಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಜಿಲ್ಲಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಕಚೇರಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಲ್ಲು ತೂರಿದ್ದರು.

NEW DELHI: The Madurai bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday stopped the construction of a new copper smelter by Sterlite industries.
The stay on construction came a day after 11 people were killed and over 65 injured after police fired on the protesters who were demanding the closure of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi over pollution concerns.
In today's hearing, the HC ordered a halt in the expansion works at the plant and ordered a public hearing of the matter.
Following the shooting, the protesters tried to ‘gherao’ the collector's office and torched vehicles inside the premise. Police officials resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd to contain the tense situation.
The Sterlite Copper plant and its proposed expansion in Thoothukudi invited several protests by locals and others who allege that the plant was polluting groundwater in their area.
Terming the killings of the protesters as a "cold-blooded murder", Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) demanded the resignation of CM Edappadi K Palaniswami.
